Growing up I never thought, nor did I ever have any reasons to believe, that someday I would have a career in law enforcement and work as a police officer for over twenty years. But more than that, I never could have fathomed that I would some day become a pastor. Now what really blows my mind is how God used the work I was doing as a police officer to prepare me for pastoral work.
Looking back, I knew at an early age I liked being around people. But interestingly enough I was very shy growing up — what a contradiction. A shy person such as myself becoming a police officer … how’s that going to work out for me? Well, just great all praise to Jesus who was with me every step of the way.
I didn’t know it then but my career as a police officer was preparing me for life in the ministry. Law enforcement taught me a lot about people. As a police officer you are guaranteed to meet people from just about every walk of life. Do you want to know why? Because people are people and when they are in trouble, they call for help. And who do they call? The police! Is your house on fire — call the police. Is your basement flooding — call the police. Has your neighbor’s dog chased your cat up a tree — call the police. You get the picture. And yes, the police will respond. I know this from first hand experience.
