I’ve gotten a lot of positive feedback on last week’s post about men being the standard bearer. Men have shared with me their own personal struggles with bearing the standard for their families. Women have shared their conflict of desiring a man to be a strong leader and yet the fear of not liking the standard that’s been set. These conversations led me to these questions …
Would God create us and then leave us without a purpose? Would He not also give mankind a standard to govern their lives by? Men have an awesome responsibility when it comes to leadership. And, it goes all the way back to the Garden of Eden. Adam, the first man, was given the task and honor of being the first standard-bearer. He was to bear the standard for himself, his wife and the family that was yet to come. But, it was God who established the standard for Heaven and Earth, including Adam, from the very beginning of time.
GOD IS THE ULTIMATE STANDARD
“These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that Jehovah God made earth and heaven.” And no plant of the field was yet in the earth, and no herb of the field had yet sprung up; for Jehovah God had not caused it to rain upon the earth: and there was not a man to till the ground; but there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground.
God continued His standard for man with this declaration.
Genesis 2:18 It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a help meet.
So the standard was set by God, even before man was created, and continued when God created a wife for Adam to be his helper. Here are the words spoken by Adam prophetically when he awoke from the deep sleep that God had placed him in.
Then God placed Adam in a deep sleep and removed one of his ribs, out of it He formed the first women from it. When Adam awoke he prophetically spoke these words, ” This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man”. Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.
When I read these Scriptures I can’t help but think, who better to look to as I lead my family? The Lord God! And, where better to look for guidance? The Holy Scriptures!
AS CHRIST LOVED THE CHURCH SO ARE MEN TO LOVES THEIR WIVES.
But as the church is subject to Christ, so also the wives ought to be to their husbands in everything. Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her, so that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word,…and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless.
The God given role of a man is that he will be a provider, a protector, a comforter and will be the spiritual leader for his family. Men are to gently guide and lead their family in the path that God has set before them. Men should never lead as a dictators who rein with an iron fist or lord their God given authority over their spouses. When a man carries the standard in the way that God intended him to, he demonstrates his love for his wife and children in a way that brings glory to God. In return, his wife and children will freely give him their respect.
Remember, we were not God’s experiment when he created us. God was not standing by waiting to see what would happen with His creation. God knew our beginning and our end and He made provisions for us beforehand. King David explains the wonderful workmanship of the hand of God in the Book of Psalms.
For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.
David, though without today’s modern technology which gives doctors the ability to dissect and decipher the human anatomy, was able-by the Spirit of God-to extrapolate the fact that we are truly amazingly created by God almighty. He knew full well that nothing is hidden from God. There is no place that man can hide himself from the loving, watchful eye of the Lord, not even his mother’s womb. It was God who formed Adam out of dust of the ground and it was the same God who formed David inside of his mother’s womb. David goes on to describe how all the days of his life were ordained by God.
King David, by way of revelation from God, understood and accepted that God sets the standards whereby men are to govern themselves. We need to learn and accept that apart from God, we can do nothing. Therefore, if men are to fulfill their intended purpose, they should seek God for their answers and guidance. We are all called to live by the word, or shall I say the standard, of God.
